Village Inn Café in Orinda offers a straightforward, old-school American diner experience that feels like a reliable neighborhood spot more than a trendy eatery. Nestled in a strip mall at 204 Village Square, it attracts locals looking for familiar comfort dishes rather than anything too flashy.

The atmosphere is unpretentious and casual, making it a natural go-to for weekend breakfasts, laid-back lunches, or a wholesome meal any day of the week. The seating and decor lean toward functional rather than stylish, which keeps the focus firmly on the food and friendly, no-fuss service.

Village Inn Café is best known for classic American breakfast staples and hearty sandwiches. The menu offers several longtime favorites like Corned Beef Hash with eggs and the Crispy Belgian Waffle, which pairs well with their take on buttermilk fried chicken, either as a sandwich or combined with waffles. Those who appreciate traditional breakfast flavors with a bit of consistency over time will find this reassuring; indeed, the menu has remained steady through changes in ownership.

This spot also caters well for families, with kid-friendly meal options like fish sticks and grilled cheese served in generous portions. Sandwiches like the Village Club with turkey, bacon, and avocado reflect a balance of indulgence and familiar flavors, while healthier choices such as egg salad or chicken salad bring a homestyle touch without feeling heavy.

Visitors often appreciate the straightforward, home-cooking vibe here, with fresh, well-prepared food that arrives in generous portions. Drinks like fresh-squeezed orange juice and regular coffee are simple but well-executed complements to the meal, supporting the relaxed local café rhythm.

The best times to visit are during traditional breakfast or lunch hours, especially weekends and summer days when families and longtime residents come out for a comfortable, familiar meal. It’s not a place to rush through, but rather one to settle into with hearty plates and familiar flavors.

Old school café offering a heart selection of good food. Went on a Sunday for breakfast and wasn't disappointed!

Surprisingly good food from a plain looking spot in a strip mall. I would probably pass on the egg salad next time, but the chicken sandwich and chicken and waffles were done of the best. Would repeat, Highly recommend Chicken dishes

I've been a resident in Lamorinda area for over 30 years. My 3 kids grew up here. One thing we enjoyed the most was a traditional breakfast on weekends, weekdays, and anyday in the summer. Unfortunately, the only two remained is this one and Millie's Kitchen in Lafayette. After changing hands a few times. I' m surprised that the menu remains the same, the famous corn beef hash and waffle taste just like 20 years ago. The new staff is equally upbeat and friendly. Thank goodness for family diners that stay around and keep serving no nonsense American food among all the diet fads. I still visit weekly.

Just a nice diner. I had the tofu scramble, which had great flavor, with two poached eggs on top.

My daughter had a chicken salad and I had a BLT with avocado. They all came out with better than picture kind of fresh and beautiful. Both actually had a real fresh home cooking style with health in mind. We had fresh squeezed OJ and regular coffee. These drinks were awesome too. I will definately come back to try other menus.

Really love their Spicy Tofu Scramble. It's only mildly spicy and completely vegan. I requested no potatoes and no toast and added avocado and spinach which made it even healthier! If you're extra hungry, add a veggie burger patty on the side. Update! Ordered the Spicy Tofu Scramble again- still just as good, fresh and always mildly spicy. This time I had it with potatoes which were really crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and piping hot. The vegetable patty seems larger and with it's slight crispy crust tastes even better than before.
